What can I do in the kitchen to keep my garbage disposal working correctly?

Always follow manufacturer recommendations for your garbage disposal including types of food remains to be avoided. Let the water run before, during and after use, typically for two minutes. To reset the disposal, most have a small button on the unit you press.

A friend told me it was okay to pour hot grease down the sink as long as I let hot water run after it; is that true?

No. The water following the grease and fat will eventually cool and so will those fats. Over time they will build up and then you have a nasty clog. Try and minimize the amount of grease and fat going down the drain. You can easily catch most cooking fats, let them cool and seal and dispose of them in the trash. Wipe down greasy pans with a paper towel before washing – if you use a cloth towel that grease will end up in your washer drain or your other clothes.

How can I keep my shower and bathroom drains clear of hair and soapy residue?

Purchase a tub or shower strainer to catch hair and other small objects. For soapy residue, let the water run when rinsing these products out. This includes shaving cream and toothpaste!

What is the optimal temperature setting for my water heater?

For most homes, a setting of 120 degrees will provide plenty of hot water and still save you in energy costs.
